He was an American actor and writer, born on February 28, 1883 in Fort Madison, Iowa, USA. He made his debut in the theatre in 1901 and in the cinema in 1915. He began his film career in silent pictures in 1915, often appearing with his third wife, Grace La Rue. He wrote three plays. He is best known for The Girl from Missouri (1934), The Great Lover (1931), and The Great Gatsby (1926). He was married to the actresses Grace La Rue, Myrtle Tannehill, and Jane Oaker. He died of a cerebral haemorrhage on May 19, 1942 in Hollywood, California, USA.
