An American director and writer, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended the University of North Carolina. He took writing courses and served in the US Navy. In 1946, he moved to New York City, where he began writing professionally. He studied playwriting with Robert Anderson at the American Theater Wing in New York. He wrote for television during the early fifties and also worked in cinema.
