A German director and actor, born in Neckarelz, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. He received acting lessons in Stuttgart, and was known in European theaters. His works were distinguished by their departure from theatrical clichés, and he gave his actors a great deal of freedom. He was awarded the French National Legion of Honour. He directed the plays Dans la jungle des villes and La Dernière Bande. He appeared in the film The Lovers on the Bridge (1991). He died on June 23, 2008.
