His debut was through the movie Mister Moneypenny (1928). He did not achieve success, so he returned to the theater with the play The Bride if Torozko (1934). He signed with MGM and Warner Brothers, then joined the Film Academy with the aim of learning film-making. Van Heflin died on July 23, 1971 in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, of a heart attack that led to his death after a 17-day coma.
