Biography

An American actor of Ukrainian origin, born in Tarnopol, Ukraine. He married actress Jeanette Briggs (1943-1950), and after their divorce, he married Sylvia Weinblatt (1968-1990), who remained with him until his death. He is known for Murder, My Sweet (1944), Nightmare Alley...Read more (1947), Some Like It Hot (1959), and It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963). He graduated from Manhattan College in 1930 after obtaining a BA. He started acting in the forties with minor roles, and for 50 years, he presented the character of a thug and a gangster, taking advantage of his huge structure and the rigidity of his features. He made significant contributions to professional wrestling, and in the 1960s, he founded the Cauliflower Alley Club, a non-profit organization that grants scholarships and financial aid to retired and injured wrestlers and their families. He died on December 9, 1990 in Glendale, California, USA.
