American writer, born in New York to German parents. His father was an investment banker, Charles Eduard Knoblauch. . He graduated from Harvard University and lived in Paris and London most of his life. He became a naturalized British citizen in 1916 and served as a captain in the British Secret Service. He died in London in 1945
