An American film director of Hungarian and Austrian origins, he was born in Mákó, Hungary. He obtained a law degree from the Eötvös Loránd University but decided to become an actor and spent several years on the stage. He directed some films just before the outbreak of World War II and when he fled to England. In 1942 he returned to Hollywood. He spent most of his career there and received an Academy Award nomination in the category for Best Writing with co-writer William Powers for the film The Gunfighter (1950) and was famous for presenting the film House of Wax (1953). He died in California, in the United States.
