An American actress and poet, born in Birmingham, Alabama, she received her education at Hunter College in New York State, then studied at New York University, and was a faculty member at a number of universities. Sanchez published her first poetry collection in 1969 under the title (Homecoming), and her publications in poetry, theater, and children's literature followed. She is an activist in movements demanding the rights of African Americans.
