A Canadian writer, who studied creative writing at Concordia University and earned a BA with honors in media studies. He began his career as a journalist, covering the photojournalism of the Egyptian army's October 1973 war. He later worked as a reporter, editor, and film critic for several Canadian publications. He also made documentaries for the National Film Board of Canada. In the 1980s, he moved to Los Angeles, collaborating with directors such as Monte Hellman and Francis Coppola, and later working on numerous television and film projects. His most notable works include The Bedroom (1985), True Stories (1986), Hamlet (1990), The Player (1992), Nixon (1995), and Traffic (2000).
