An American actor and painter, born in Jerusalem. He got married twice and had four children. His most important works include the film The Wrong Man (1956), Some Like It Hot (1959), and An American Tail (1986.) He studied at the Hebrew Technical Institute in New York State in 1937, and got a job as an electrician maintaining signals in the subway. He then shifted his interest to the theater, joined an amateur troupe, and made his official debut in New York theaters in 1940. However, World War II stopped his career, and he was conscripted until the end of the war and was later discharged, to return to the theater and become one of the pioneers of the Actor's Studio. He made his debut in The Naked City (1948). He often played the role of Eastern Europeans, such as the role of a taxi driver, and even the role of Joseph Stalin. Among his works are also The Harder They Fall (1956) and The Wrong Man (1956), which was directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
