He won a star on the Walk of Fame in 1976 and was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in 1981. He is best known for The Andy Griffith Show (1960-1968), A Face in the Crowd (1957), Waitress (2007), and Matlock (1986-1995). He died on July 3, 2012, in Manteo, North Carolina, USA, of a heart attack.
