Portuguese psychiatrist and writer, born in Lisbon, Portugal. He attended and completed his medical studies at the University of Lisbon. He subsequently became a specialist in psychiatry after graduating. He continued to write all during this period. After completing his education, he was forced to serve in the Portuguese Army during the Portuguese Colonial War. He was stationed at a military hospital in Angola, where he developed an interest in death-related topics. Following his return from Africa in 1973, he wrote many novels on the Angolan War of Independence. Memória de Elefante, his debut book, was released in 1979. He received a nomination for the Literature Nobel Prize.
