He wrote his first play Parting at Imsdorf in 1940, which won the Maxwell Anderson Fierce Award in theater. He then wrote the play Shakespeare's "Second-Best Bed" which was shown on Broadway in 1946. In the 1950s, he moved from New York to Hollywood to write the movie, The Rainmaker. He wrote several movies, novels, and plays, including the movies The Sainted Sisters (1948), Helen of Troy (1956), and Porgy and Bess (1959).
