A French writer, who is known for writing several serial novels. In 1861, he published a new series of stories entitled Le Médecin des pauvres (Physician to the Poor), which achieved unprecedented popularity. He is the author of one of the best-selling novels of the nineteenth century La Porteuse de pain (The Bread Peddler), which was published in 1889, and was adapted successively for the theater, cinema, and television. He died on April 30, 1902 in Paris.
