An American journalist, war correspondent, author, and television producer, born in Montesano, Washington, USA. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. He also worked for the San Francisco Chronicle and the Miami Herald in the 1950s. While living and working in Florida, he wrote a letter to Ernest Hemingway, and the two became friends. He adapted a Hemingway novel and wrote the screenplays for several works of art, including Red Sun, Men of the Dragon, and The Cowboy and the Ballerina.
