James Whitmore was born in White Plane, New York, USA, on October 1, 1921. Whitmore graduated from Yale University in 1944 and then served in the US Marines during WWII. He excelled as an actor on Broadway, after which he went to Hollywood, making his film debut in The Undercover...Read more Man (1949). His second movie, Battleground (1949), earned him a Golden Globe Award, and an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He then starred in The Asphalt Jungle (1950), and Mrs. O'Malley and Mr. Malone (1950). In 1959, Whitmore turned more and more towards the small screen, along with his playing cinematic and theatrical roles. Whitmore was nominated for two Academy Awards, and received several awards, in addition to a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Among Whitmore's most notable films are Battleground (1949), Them! (1954), Give 'em Hell, Harry! (1975), and The Shawshank Redemption (1994). He died in Malibu, California, USA on February 6, 2009.
