An American actor, born in Kingston, Jamaica. He is the son of a mixed-race Jamaican mother and a Spanish father. His family immigrated to the United States when he was six years old, settling in Boston. He then became interested in acting and began performing in amateur theater...Read more groups and troupes. He graduated from high school in Boston, then studied law at Northeastern University, and later joined the New England Comprehensive Theater. He began appearing in stage productions, and stopped acting in 1942 when he joined the U.S. Navy during World War II. He then returned to pursue his artistic career. He participated in the civil rights struggles of the 1950s and 1960s, and called on his theater and film partners to support the efforts of Black Americans.
