British singer, songwriter, and peace activist born on 9 October 1940 in Liverpool, United Kingdom. He rose to world fame being a founder, singer, and rhythm guitarist of the band The Beatles. His songwriting partnership with Paul McCartney remains the most successful in history. In 1969, he formed Plastic Ono Band with his second wife Yoko Ono. His most famous songs include "Here Comes the Sun", and "Imagine". He made his acting debut on the short film The Cavern Club (1962). His most famous works as an actor include A Hard Day's Night and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. He was shot and killed by a Beatles fan, Mark David Chapman, on 8 December 1980 in New York City.
