Dutch writer, director, and producer born in 1954 in Bloemendaal, Noord-Holland, Netherlands. He moved to the US in 1972, and attended San Francisco Art Institute from 1975 to 1980, where he received a BA and MFA in film and history of art. His most notable works include Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), The Color Purple (1985), The Siege (1998), and Martian Child (2007).
