A Russian novelist, born in Staroe Gorokhovo, Russia. Among his works are "The Tale of Cross-eyed Lefty from Tula and the Steel Flea " and "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk", which was later made into an opera by Shostakovich. The novel was also adapted by director Andrzej Wajda into the 1962 film Siberian Lady Macbeth. He died on February 21, 1895.
