That same year, he co-founded a workshop and listened for the first time to recordings of the black singer Bessie Smith, which had a major influence on August Wilson's determination to address the cultural and historical experience of Negroes in his literary works. He was nominated for an Academy Award in 2017 and won the Black Film Critics Circle Award in 2016. He died on October 2, 2005 in Seattle, Washington, of liver cancer.
