Sonita Alizadeh is the first female Afghan rapper. She was born in Herat, Afghanistan. She rebelled against the miserable traditions in her country and refused forced marriage at the age of ten. Her love for rap music prompted her to challenge everyone around her by releasing a video song entitled “Brides for Sale,” in which she denounces the marriage of underage girls. She started from the United States, where she now lives after fleeing to it via Iran, and set out in the world of singing, defending the rights of women and minor Afghan girls. Her story was made into a documentary entitled Sonita, which won the Audience Award at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam.
