A British director, writer, and producer, born in Liverpool, England. Then his family moved to London. As a teenager, he won a film contest for amateurs. He worked as a technician for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), then became a sound engineer. He also began directing documentaries. His directorial debut was Wide Boy (1952). His first writing credit was in The Drayton Case (1953). Among his other credits are The Trials of Oscar Wilde (1960) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968).
