A British director, writer, and producer. He was born in Liverpool, England, and then his family moved to London. As a teenager, he won a film contest for amateurs. He worked as a technician for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), then became a sound engineer. He also began directing documentaries. His directorial debut was Wide Boy (1952). He also wrote his first film the following year, entitled The Drayton Case (1953). Among his writings are The Trials of Oscar Wilde (1960) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968).
