An Italian director, screenwriter, and producer. He was born in Florence, and he studied at the University of Florence. He worked with many artists, including Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and Laurence Olivier.  He initially studied architecture, but later he devoted his professional life to theater and began working as a designer at the Florence Theatre.  In 2004, he became the first Italian to receive the honorary knighthood from Britain. He directed many works, such as Romeo and Juliet (1968), Hamlet  (1990) , and Callas Forever (2002), which he presented about the life story of his friend, the late opera star, Maria Callas.
