He has served as an assistant attorney general for the state of Ohio and as a trial attorney for the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C. Richard studied writing with Jesse Hill Ford at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His first short story was published in The Atlantic, and his first novel, The Lasko Tangent, won the Edgar Award for Fiction in 1979. He is the author of The Spire and Eclipse.
