American critic, historian, and filmmaker born on 16 September 1950 in Keyser, West Virginia, US. He is the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and Director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University. His works in film include 12 Years a Slave (2013), Frederick Douglas: In Five Speeches (2022), and The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (2013).
