A Czech-born Austro-Hungarian cinematographer, film director and screenwriter. He set the standard for Universal's horror film characters in the 1930s, providing a model for subsequent generations of horror films. He won an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for The Good Earth...Read more (1937), and was nominated for an Academy Award for Blossoms in the Dust (1941) and The Chocolate Soldier (1941). His credits include The Mummy (1932) and Metropolis (1927). He died on May 3, 1969.
