An American screenwriter, director and actor, born in Brookline, Massachusetts, USA. In World War I, he enlisted in the Norton-Harjes Ambulance Corps to serve as a driver in Europe. While in Paris, he joined the French Foreign Legion. He won the Academy Award for Best Original Story for A Star Is Born (1937). His other credits include The Ox-Bow Incident, Lafayette Escadrille, and Gallant Journey. He died on December 9, 1975.
