South African journalist and writer, born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He was awarded the Lord Kemsley Commonwealth Journalistic Scholarship, and he served as a war correspondent during World War II. He became friends with Ian Fleming, the creator of the British secret agent James Bond books, when he was employed at the Sunday Times. In 1959, he penned his debut novel, A Twist of Sand, which underwent translation into 23 languages and found its cinematic adaptation in 1968. He died on November 7, 2001, in Durban, South Africa.
