British screenwriter and novelist, born  in London, England. In 1948, after completing National Service, he studied at King's College, Cambridge, so that he could read the classics. He stands as one of the most renowned novelists of his generation and the leading television screenwriter in Britain. In 1959, the BBC published his first book, The Feathers of Death, and broadcast his first television play, The Royal Foundation, in 1961. Since then, he has collaborated on numerous other works. He is known for The Pallisers (1974), Sexton Blake and the Demon God (1978), Love in a Cold Climate (1980), and The Search for Alexander the Great (1981). He died on May 12, 2001, in London.
