He enlisted in the Navy in 1945 following the end of World War II, and studied at Black Mountain College in North Carolina for two years, where he studied sculpture. He then moved to...Read more Southern California and joined the Pasadena School of Theatre, where he performed in dozens of plays. He later moved to Boston, Massachusetts, to become a member of the Boston Theatre Company and wrote various television series. In 1958, he presented his play Blue Denim, which was shown on Broadway and was adapted into a film the following year. His novel All Fall Down was adapted into a film in 1962, and in 1965, he wrote his novel Midnight Cowboy, which was adapted into a film in 1969.
