A British film, theater, and television actor born, in Jhansi, United Provinces, British India, to an Anglo-Indian civil servant. Michael Bates married Margaret M.J. Chisholm (1954-1978), they had three children, and she remained with him until his death. He won the Clarence Derwent Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1972. Among his most important works are It Ain't Half Hot Mum (1974-1977), A Clockwork Orange (1971), Frenzy (1972), and Patton (1970). Michael Bates was educated at Uppingham School and St Catherine's College, Cambridge. He served during World War II with the Chindits behind Japanese lines in Burma. Bates was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company (1948-1953), and he also acted at the Connaught Theatre. He died in Chelsea, London, England, United Kingdom, on January 11, 1978, from cancer at the age of 57.
