An American author and screenwriter, born in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. His father was a journalist. He began his writing career as a reporter for the New York Post, then became an assistant editor at the New York Times. He was drafted into the Army in 1946, and worked as a journalist...Read more and reporter over the next two decades in a number of cities. He is best known for his novels about the African-American detective John Shaft. He also co-wrote the screenplay for the film version titled Shaft with writer John Donald Francis Black in 1971. He won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for the film The French Connection, in addition to the Golden Globe Award and the Writers Guild of America Award. In 1973, he wrote the screenplay for the film High Plains Drifter, directed by and starring Clint Eastwood, and co-wrote the film A Force of One in 1979, one of the films of action film actor Chuck Norris.
