British writer and illustrator, born in Wimbledon, United Kingdom. He attended the Rutlish School and began pursuing cartooning at a young age. He also studied drawing at the Wimbledon School of Art as well as printmaking at the Central School of Art. He enlisted in the Royal...Read more Corps of Signals at Catterick, where he became a painter. Following his two years of National Service, he went back to London to study drawing at the Slade School of Fine Art, where he eventually earned his degree in 1957. He sketched for a short while before becoming a professional artist and soon began working on children's books, for which he was awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2017 Honors List for services to literature. He wrote several works, such as When the Wind Blows (1986), The Snowman (1982), and Ivor the Invisible (2001). He died on August 9, 2022.
