An American author, born in Iowa, the United States, and graduated from Grinnell College in 1910. He then spent four years as a member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. In 1914, when World War I broke out, he volunteered for the Ninth Corps of Riflemen in...Read more the army, and joined the army in France in 1916, after which he was promoted to the rank of captain. In 1918, his plane was shot down and he became a prisoner of the Germans until the end of the war. Among his credits are Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) and Passage to Marseille (1944). He died on July 6, 1951.
