An English director who spent most of his career in Hollywood. He studied art, and when World War I broke out, he served in the British Army and was made an officer, then the Germans captured him. After his release at the end of the war, he pursued a career as an actor and director. Following his success in directing the 1928 play Journey's End, he relocated to the United States, initially directing stage productions on Broadway before settling in Hollywood, California, to make motion pictures. His most important works include Green Hell (1940), Port of Seven Seas (1938), Show Boat (1936), and They Dare Not Love (1941). He died on May 29, 1957.
