English director, spent most of his career in Hollywood. Early discovery of his artistic talent led him to study art, and when World War I broke out, the British Army drafted him and made him an officer. The Germans captured him, during which he discovered his interest in drama. After his release at the end of the war, he pursued a career as an actor and director. Following his success in directing the 1928 drama Journey's End, he relocated to the United States, initially directing stage productions on Broadway before settling in Hollywood, California, to make motion pictures. His most important works include Green Hell (1940), Port of Seven Seas (1938), Show Boat (1936), and They Dare Not Love (1941). He died on May 29, 1957.
