British director, producer, and writer, born in London, England, United Kingdom. He studied at Hurstpierpoint College and began his career as a cinematographer, working on the British war film One of Our Aircraft Is Missing (1942), which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Special Effects. Then he moved to directing, and his films include Scrooge (1970), Meteor (1979), and First Monday in October (1981). In recognition of his contributions to the film industry, he received an OBE. He died June 16, 2010 in Los Angeles, California, USA.
