An American director and writer, born in Evanston, Illinois, USA, and raised in the Reseda area of Los Angeles. He graduated from Reseda Charter High School in 1961, then earned a degree in anthropology from California State University, Northridge, and went to France to work on...Read more a doctorate in ethnology. He studied at the Collège de France and also attended Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales with sociologist Georges Balandier. However, he spent most of his free time in French cinemas and soon became interested in filmmaking, and dropped out of his doctoral program and entered the École Nationale Superieur de Cinema. After graduating in 1970, he spent a decade writing and directing documentaries.
