An American actress, born in Greenwood, Mississippi, on October 19, 1914. Juanita Moore broke into Hollywood in the early fifties, at a time when there were few opportunities for black actors, due to racial discrimination. She received an Academy Award nomination for her performance in Imitation of Life (1959), a controversial movie about racial discrimination. During the sixties, America underwent several social upheavals, which benefited people of color, after which Moore appeared in many films in the sixties and seventies. Among her most notable work: The Girl Can't Help It (1956), Imitation of Life (1959), Two Moon Junction (1988), and The Kid (2000). She died on January 1, 2014 in Los Angeles, California.
