A Chinese director, born in Nanjing, China. He is known for his films that focus on the social and economic transformations in contemporary China. His films include The Orphan of Anyang (2001) and Luxury Car (2006). He won the International Federation of Film Critics Award at the Chicago International Film Festival in 2001 for the film The Orphan of Anyang, the Best Film in Competition Award at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2006 for the film Luxury Car, and the Jury Prize at the Chinese Independent Film Festival in 2011 for the film Celestial Kingdom.
