A Russian-born German author and writer, born on January 24, 1776 in Königsberg, East Prussia (now Russia). He went to university to study law from 1792 to 1795. His works include: Nötknäpparen, Hush!, The Nutcracker, and Hoffmaniada. He died on June 25, 1822 in Berlin.
