• An Austrian-American writer and actor, born in Vienna, Austria. He is the son of actor Rudolph Schildkraut and his wife, Erna Weinstein. His Jewish family moved to Hamburg, Germany...Read more when he was four. He studied piano and violin as he was inspired by his father's profession. The family moved again to Berlin where his father built a strong relationship with the famous theater director Max Reinhardt. After Joseph graduated from the Royal Music Institute of Berlin in 1911, the family immigrated to America and settled in New York. His most important works include The Diary of Anne Frank (1959), The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965), The Shop Around the Corner (1940), and Lady of the Tropics (1939).
