A Greek actress, born in Piraeus, Greece. She made her stage debut in 1928. She studied to become an opera singer at the Musée d'Orsay in Geneva. She appeared in several films, including For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943), Confidential Agent (1945), The Inheritance (1947), Mourning Becomes Electra (1947), Mr. Arkadin (1955), Rocco and His Brothers (1960), and Zita (1968). She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.
