An English theater director, born on 14 January 1940 in Ipswich, Suffolk, UK. He studied at Downing College at the University of Cambridge. He served as the artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company from 1968 to 1986. He was nominated for many awards including the Laurence Olivier Award, which he won three times. He also won the London Evening Standard Theatre Award in 1999 for Best Director for Summerfolk and The Merchant of Venice, which was performed at the Royal National Theatre. Among his works is Red Joan (2018).
