An American screenwriter and director, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 18, 1912, as Reuben Sax. Richard Brooks was nominated for many awards and also won many, most notably the Academy Award as a writer and the NBR Award as a director, as well as a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. Brooks graduated from West Philadelphia School and attended Philadelphia University for two years. He worked as a sports reporter and radio journalist in the 1930s and also worked as a writer for NBC. He worked as a theater director in New York for a year, then went to Los Angeles and worked as a screenwriter for low-production films. He contracted with MGM, and his films were always attractive. Richard Brooks' most important movies include Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), Elmer Gantry (1960), and In Cold Blood (1967). Richard Brooks died on March 11, 1992, in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California, of heart failure.
