A Scottish writer and physician, born in Cardross, Scotland. He practiced medicine from 1919 till 1930, then he retired to pursue writing. He moved his family to the United States in the late 1930s and settled in Connecticut. Many of his novels were adapted into films such as "Hatter's Castle", "The Stars Look Down", "The Keys of the Kingdom", and "The Citadel". He died on 6 January, 1981 in Montreux, Switzerland.
