A British actress of an Indian descent, born on 25 February, 1960 in Kolkata, India. She moved to London as a child and was trained at the Royal Court Theatre alongside with the actor Tim Roth. She appeared on British television and in several stage productions before making her film debut with The Chain (1984). She rose to fame for playing the role Tania in the film My Beautiful Laundrette (1985).
