Canadian actress, born in Yvelines, France, to British parents. Before she was fifteen years old, she signed a contract with MGM in 1936. Later, she signed with Universal, where director Hethreoster introduced her in the films Three Smart Girls (1936) and One Hundred Men and a...Read more Girl (1937). She chose isolation at the age of 27, and after the failure of her first marriages, she asked her third husband, the French director Charles David, to provide her with a quiet life away from the limelight, where she moved to a suburb on the outskirts of Paris, and lived her family life away from fame. She won the Academy Award in 1939 for Best New Actress, shared with actor Mickey Rooney, and she also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. She married three men and gave birth to two children. Her works in cinema include Three Smart Girls (1936), Mad About Music (1938), and It's a Date (1940).
