A Northern Irish film, television, and theater actor, born in Ballycastle, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. He has an older brother who works as a cinematographer and a sister who works as a producer. He also has a younger brother named Ronan, who is a sound engineer who won three Emmy Awards for his sound mixing for Game of Thrones. He has performed in theaters in the United Kingdom and the United States. He won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor and received two Tony Award nominations. He is best known for his role as Varys on the HBO series Game of Thrones (2011–2019). He made his Broadway debut in the play Stones in His Pockets by Marie Jones. He received the Dora Mavor Moore Award for his work on the Canadian production of the play. His other credits include Goodbye, Mr. Chips (2002) and Whatever Works (2009).
