An Australian film director and writer, born in the United Kingdom to an Australian father, who immigrated to Australia in 1961. He is related to many Australian artists, as he is the brother of novelist Virginia Duigan the wife of the director Bruce Beresford, and the uncle of actress Trilby Beresford. He studied at the University of Melbourne and graduated in 1973 with a Master's degree in Philosophy. While he was at the university, he worked extensively as an actor and director in theatre. His most important works as a director include Molly (1999), The Parole Officer (2001), Lawn Dogs (1997), Flirting (1991), and The Journey of August King (1995).
